Helen's 2,659 mile hike

In April 2019, our Pensions Technical Specialist Helen Shepherd began her trek, backpacking 2,659 miles up the western United States to fundraise for Diabetes UK. The trail started at the US / Mexican border in Campo, California and ends just over the US / Canadian border in Manning Park.

She’s carrying everything she needs in her backpack and wild camping along the way. The trek will involve walking around 20 miles every day, for around 5½ months in total, carrying at least 25lbs (11kgs) on her back, whilst negotiating terrain that will be up to four times the height of Snowdon in places. Throw in a few bears, mountain lions, rattle snakes and poisonous plants and you've got the full picture!

Ultimately, as a Type 1 Diabetic herself, Helen’s aim is to help inspire others who are living with diabetes to get out there and take part in their own adventures. If she can raise money for a very worthy cause in the process then she will be very happy indeed.
